Geographic Areas
The JSNA includes data presented at a range of different geographical areas. The table below outlines and defines these.
Geographic Area | Definition |
---|---|
Output Area (OA) | The lowest level of geographical area for census statistics. They comprise between 40 – 250 households and have a resident population between 100 – 625 people. |
Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) | They are made up of groups of usually 4-5 Output Areas. They comprise between 400 – 1,200 households and have a resident population between 1,000 – 3,000 people. |
Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) | They are made up of groups of usually 4-5 LSOAs. They comprise between 2,000 – 6,000 households and have a usually resident population between 5,000 – 15,000 people |
Ward | Wards are electoral districts at sub-national level represented by one or more councillors. The ward is the primary unit of English electoral geography for civil parishes, borough and district councils. |
