Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term that describes a disease of the heart or blood vessels. This dashboard summarises the treatment and outcomes of Barnet patients with records of CVD.

Narrative

Hypertension monitoring and management

Up to September 2023, the percentage of patients in Barnet PCNs with hypertension, who had a blood pressure reading within the preceding 12 months, was generally lower than the London and England average percentages. PCN1D had a higher percentage than London and England average percentages. Older age groups of patients had higher percentages compared with younger age groups.

For patients with hypertension, the percentage who were treated to the recommended age-specific thresholds in Barnet PCNs was generally lower than the London and England average percentages. Barnet PCN 1D was higher than the London and England average percentages. The percentage of people who are treated to the recommended age-specific thresholds tends to increase with age. There is variation by ethnicity, with Asian and White population groups having generally higher than average percentages who were treated to target, and Black populations lower than average.

Cardiovascular disease and smoking cessation

Up to September 2023, for patients with cardiovascular disease or cardiovascular disease risk factors who are current smokers, the percentage who are offered smoking cessation support in the preceding 12-months is recorded. Half of the Barnet PCNs (PCNs 1D, 5 and 4) are above the London and England average percentages, for offering this group smoking cessation support.

Atrial fibrillation and anti-coagulation

Up to June 2023 in all Barnet PCNs, the percentages of patients with atrial fibrillation and a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 2 or more, who were treated with anti-coagulation was higher than the average London and England percentages.  There was variation by ethnicity, with some ethnicity groups in Barnet PCNs having lower percentages than the London and England averages.

Lipid lowering therapy

Up to June 2023, the percentage of patients without CVD, but with a QRISK score of 10% or more who are on lipid lowering therapy, is lower than the England and London averages in 5 of the 7 Barnet PCNs. This ranged from 47% in PCN6 to 57% in PCN1D.

For patients with recorded CVD, the percentage who received lipid lowering therapy ranged from 73% in PCN1d to 83% in PCN1w. These percentages varied by age group, ethnicity, and sex.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes treatment targets

In 2022/23, the percentage of Barnet patients with type 1 diabetes who achieved all three treatment targets, was higher than the England average percentage but lower than the other four North Central London boroughs.

The percentage of Barnet patients with type 2 diabetes who achieved all three treatment targets, was higher than the England and Islington percentages, but lower than the other North Central London boroughs.

NHS Health Checks

From 2018/19 to 2022/23, the cumulative percentage of the eligible population who received an NHS health check in Barnet, was higher than 2 of the other 4 North Central London boroughs. A general decline during recent years reflects the reduction in NHS health check delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mortality from cardiovascular disease aged under 75 years

Over recent years (with data up to 2022), the age standardised mortality rate from cardiovascular disease in people aged under 75-years, was lower in Barnet compared with the London and North Central London averages.
