National Childhood Measurement Programme

The National Childhood Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a nationally mandated public health programme. The NCMP measures the height and weight of children in Reception class (aged 4 to 5) and year 6 (aged 10 to 11), to assess overweight and obesity levels in children within primary schools.

Headline Figures

  • 79.4% of Reception children and 64.2% of Year 6 children in Barnet were of healthy weight in 2022/23.
  • 19.3% of Reception children and 33.7% of Year 6 children in Barnet were overweight or very overweight in 2022/23.
  • Barnet has a significantly lower proportion of Reception and Year 6 children living with obesity compared to the London and England averages.
  • The prevalence of Year 6 children who are overweight decreased by 2.3% between 2021/22 and 2022/23. In the same time period, the prevalence of Year 6 children living with severe obesity also decreased by 2.3%. There were no significant changes in Reception children.
  • As deprivation decreases, prevalence of overweight & very overweight decreases amongst Reception and Year 6 children in Barnet.
  • For both Reception and Year 6 children, highest levels of very overweight prevalence is seen in the west of the borough. There appears to be no geographical trend in underweight prevalence.
