National Child Measurement Programme
The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a nationally mandated public health programme. The NCMP measures the height and weight of children in Reception class (aged 4 to 5) and year 6 (aged 10 to 11), to assess overweight and obesity levels in children within primary schools.
Headline Figures
- 80.1% of Reception children and 64.0% of Year 6 children in Barnet were of healthy weight in 2024/25 – this is significantly higher than the London and England average.
- 18.8% of Reception children and 33.9% of Year 6 children in Barnet were overweight or very overweight in 2024/25.
- Barnet has a significantly lower proportion of Reception and Year 6 children living with obesity compared to the London and England average.
- As the deprivation of the area that students live in increases, the prevalence of overweight & very overweight also increases amongst Year 6 children in Barnet.
- Overweight and very overweight prevalence varies by ward and ethnic group.
