Community safety is a key priority in Barnet. The crime dashboard provides insights into patterns of criminal activity across the borough, benchmarked against London and England averages where possible.

Headline Figures

  • Between 2020-2022, anti-social behaviour was the most prevalent type of crime in Barnet, with a rate of 37.6 per 1,000 residents. This is lower than the London average but higher than the England average.
  • Between 2021-2023, the ward with the highest average number of crimes was West Hendon at 15 whilst the ward with the lowest average number of crimes was Underhill at 2.
  • Barnet has a crime severity score of 272 – this is similar to England and lower than London.

Narrative

  • Between 2020 and 2022, anti-social behaviour was the most prevalent type of crime in Barnet (37.64 times per 1,000 residents). This was lower than the London average (44.08 per 1,000) but higher than the England average (27.76 per 1,000).  
  • Anti-social behaviour was most observed in Burnt Oak (50.8 times per month on average), followed by Cricklewood (45.7 times) and Childs Hill (42.2 times), between January 2021 and February 2024. However, there was a notable increase in anti-social behaviour in Colindale South (49.9 times) in 2023. 
  • From January 2021 to February 2024, West Hendon had most crimes (199 times per month on average). In the same period, Barent 039D (within West Hendon) was the LSOA that recorded highest crime prevalence (70.1 times). At street level, streets on or near supermarkets being hotspots for crimes (66.9 times). Amongst streets on or near supermarkets, those in Cricklewood recorded highest number of crimes per month on average (13.4 times).  
  • When crimes were weighted by their severity, Barnet (2.3) was overall similar to the England average (2.2) and lower than the London average (3.0) between 2002 and 2023. Please note that the figures are weighted average scores with no specific units. 
  • West Hendon (21.4 times per month on average) and Childs Hill (20 times) were the hotspots for violent crimes, including domestic abuse, hate crime, miscellaneous crime, and gun crime, between April 2018 and January 2024. 
  • Throughout all periods from 2012 to 2022, the number of hospital admissions for assault by sharp object in Barent (26 admissions per year on average) was mostly lower than the London average (32.1 admissions), except for 2015-16 (35 admissions) and 2018-19 (40 admissions). 
  • As for crimes on public transport from 2018 to 2023, they most commonly took place on London Underground and Rail. 
  • Regarding crimes that either took place on business premises or are associated with business, theft and handling (437.2 times per month on average) were the most common types of crimes in Barnet between January 2022 and January 2024.
